Microsoftは本日、Windows 10イベントを予定通り開催し、Windows 7、Windows 8.1、Windows Phone 8.1のユーザーは、Windows 10に無料アップグレード可能になるという衝撃的な発表を行いました(The Verge、PC Watch、TechCrunch日本版)。
ただし、いつまでも無料でアップグレードできるわけではなく、Windows 10の発売後1年限定と期間が限定されています。今までにない取り組みなので実際に始まってみないとわからない部分が多いのですが、Windows 8のリリース直後に販売された1200円の特別アップグレード版の無料版みたいなものととらえると分かりやすいのかもしれません。
またMicrosoftのTerry Myersonはブログで以下のように語っています。
This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet.
「これは1度限りのアップグレード以上のもので、WindowsデバイスがWindows 10にアップグレードされた後、デバイスのライフタイムの間、無償でアップデートを維持していく」として、Windowsを「Windows as a Service」として捉えている意向を示しています。Windows 10以降、Windowsはこれまでとかなり形が変わった形で提供されることになるのかもしれません。
Windows 10が無料アップグレード可能になるという噂は以前から流れていて、今回の発表でこの噂が正しかったことが証明されました。Windows 10の新ビルドは来週リリースされるようです。
