存続問題で揺れていた「The Old Reader」ですが、アメリカ国内の企業(名前は今のところ不明)の支援を受け今後も存続していくことが正式に発表されました(公式ブログ:The New Old Reader、The Next Web)。
We’re pleased to announce that The Old Reader will officially remain open to the public! The application now has a bigger team, significantly more resources, and a new corporate entity in the United States. We’re incredibly excited to be a part of this great web application and would like to share some details about its future as well as thank you for remaining loyal users. We’re big fans and users of The Old Reader and look forward to helping it grow and improve for years to come.
より大きな開発チームとかなり多くのリソースを入手できたということなので、Googleリーダー難民流入移行悩まされていたとされるFeedの取りこぼし問題や、動作の重さなども解決される可能性もありそうです。
10倍高速なホスティングサービスに移行
ブログの後半によると、米国でトップクラスのホスティングサービスへ、The Old Readerを動かしているサーバーを移転することも予定されているようです。
To facilitate these improvements, we’re going to be transitioning The Old Reader to a top tier hosting facility in the United States this coming week. It’s going to require some downtime and for that we sincerely apologize, but it’s also going to mean A LOT more servers, 10x faster networks, and long-term stability. We realize that doesn’t make the downtime easy but rest assured that things are looking up.
移行期間中はダウンタイムが発生するそうですが、ネットワークが10倍高速になるそうなので、ユーザーからするとかなり期待が持てますね。
新開発チームの詳細に関しては今後数週間以内に発表される予定とのこと。そういえばこのブログの署名は「Ben Wolf, The Old Reader」となっています。The Old Reader創設者であるDmitryとElenaの手を既に離れてしまったのかも?
とりあえず朗報
一連の流れでユーザーは右往左往することになりましたが、ひとまずサービス存続が決定したことは朗報といって良いでしょう。とはいえマネタイズプランなどは相変わらず不明なのでその点不安は残ります(これは他のRSSリーダーサービスでもいえますけど)。
