Microsoftが、Windows Insider ProgramのDevチャンネルユーザー向けに公開しているWindows 11の最新ビルドではWindows Updateに対する大きな改良が加えられています(Softpedia)。
先日公開されたWindows 11 Insider Preview Build 22567に、Windows Updateを実行し更新プログラムをインストールする時間を調整することで、再生可能なエネルギーを活用し、二酸化炭素排出量の削減を目指す新機能が追加されているのです。
風力、太陽光、水力などのクリーンなエネルギーが利用可能な時間帯に、更新プログラムをバックグラウンドでインストールすることで、化石燃料の使用を抑制しようという試みです。
Microsoftはリリースノートで以下のように説明しています。
Windows Update will try to schedule update installations at specific times of day when doing so results in lower carbon emissions. Most electrical grids are powered by multiple sources, including renewables and fossil fuels. Whenever possible, Windows 11 will now prioritize installing updates in the background at times when greater amounts of clean energy sources (like wind, solar, and hydro) are available. Users can always choose to install updates immediately by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and choosing “Check for Updates,
Windows Updateは、更新プログラムのインストールを特定の時間帯に行うことで、二酸化炭素排出量が少なくなるようにします。ほとんどの電力網は、自然エネルギーと化石燃料を含む複数の電力源から電力を供給されています。Windows 11 では、可能な限り、より多くのクリーンなエネルギー源 (風力、太陽光、水力など) が利用可能な時間帯に、アップデートをバックグラウンドでインストールすることを優先するようになりました。ユーザーは、「設定」>「Windows Update」から「更新プログラムのチェック」を選択することで、いつでも更新プログラムをすぐにインストールすることができます。
ただし、この機能はクリーンエネルギーに関する情報に依存しているため、すべてのユーザー使用できるわけではないとのこと。機能が利用可能な場合、設定ページに、二酸化炭素排出量の削減に取り組んでいるというメッセージが表示されるとのことです。
This feature will only be enabled when your PC is plugged-in and regional carbon intensity data is available from our partners electricityMap or WattTime.
